IPHONE 8 – WHAT WE SHOULD EXPECT

The most anticipated Apple device (iPhone 8) is, undoubtedly going to be an allrounder- And I’ll explain why. The iphone 8 has amazing features that for a long time would be unbeatable.

KIND OF DISPLAY?

The iphone 8 will likely feature an edgeless OLED display, meaning that it won’t have straight corners, but reports suggesting that the display might incorporate a curved design might be wrong- And this post would explain why!

According to IHS Markit analyst Wayne Lam via Macrumours, Apple is widely expected to launch an iPhone with a 5.8-inch edge-to-edge OLED display later this year, made possible by slimmer bezels and no Home button. And while some reports have claimed the screen will be curved, a growing number of sources expect the device to stick with a flat display. (meaning  the iPhone 8’s display will essentially sport the same flat design as the iPhone 7.)

“We anticipate Apple will adopt a flat implementation of OLED design on their special iPhone model,” Lam said, “which is analogous to the current 2.5D glass design.”

One possibility is that reports calling for a “curved” screen are actually referring to the 2.5D cover glass, as seen in previous iPhone rumor cycles. Another is that, given the flexible properties of OLED, some reports might be simply assuming the next iPhone will have a curved display, when a flat design is still an option.

I recently confirmed that Samsung is expected to supply Apple with OLED displays in 2017. IHS Markit and other sources expect Apple to use OLED on a larger number of iPhone models in the future. So the reality is that the iPhone 8 almost certainly will have a curved glass display – the only question is just how much curvature. We can be confident that Apple isn’t going to adopt Samsung’s rather gimmicky side icons, so it isn’t going to need that degree of curve. What we’ll likely see on the iPhone 8 is 2.5D glass, which sits between truly flat 2D glass and what’s known as 3D glass (in Snamsung Edge Devices). 2D glass is the traditional flat panel with right angle edges we’ve seen on phones for years, where 3D glass has a prominent curve at the edges so the display image can wrap around onto the sides of the phone. 2.5D glass is more like 2D glass, but with a curved bevel edge that blends into the smartphone’s body.

There’s plenty of speculation surrounding what features we’ll see on the iPhone 8 this fall. OLED sounds like a sure thing for the display. Embedding the Touch ID sensor in the display glass and ditching the Home button is sounding pretty plausible, too.

Reports saying the front-facing camera is getting a serious upgrade might be on track. Those claim we’ll get a higher resolution camera with 3D scanning technology for facial recognition and 3D selfies.

Apart from the display improvements, I believe that the iPhone 8 will feature improved battery life, wireless charging capabilities, an improved IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, enhanced Siri features, facial recognition, and I’m still expecting the device to feature 2 cameras on the back, much like the current iPhone 7 Plus. Other new features too, are forthcoming . There are also speculations that the iPhone 8 will introduce some new and intriguing augmented reality features.

HOME BUTTON- HOW?

The Home button is most likely to be embedded in the display itself, meaning that it will no longer be a separate button at the bottom of the front of the device, as the addition of the function area and nearly bezel-less design means we will likely see the demise of the Home button as we know it this year. As for Touch ID, it seems likely that Touch ID will also be embedded in the display.iphone 8 Apple has a patent that theoretically allows for such a technology. Instead of the capacitive solution that Touch ID uses today, an embedded solution would use ultrasonic imaging technology that is believed to be much more accurate (This type of scanner is very new and largely untested in a variety of conditions, but initial results show promise for the technology. It combines the large plate size and ease of use of the optical scanners with the ability to pervade dirt and residue on the scanner, an advantage of capacitive scanners.)

WIRELESS CHARGING- YES OR NO?

One of the biggest iPhone 8 expectations that has changed recently relates to wireless charging. Originally, it was widely rumored that the iPhone 8 would feature a wide-range  wireless charging area. This would have been a major technological achievement on Apple’s part, but according to more recent reports, the iPhone 8 will feature inductive wireless charging. Most reports have suggested that Apple will sell the wireless charging technology separate from the iPhone 8 itself. This likely refers to something like a charging pad or mat. Even though it is expected to be using an inductive solution, it is believed that Apple has been working on its own inductive solution with Broadcom.  It’s unclear how much Apple could potentially sell its wireless charging technology for, but they should sell it around $50 to $75 in the market on release.

WHEN WOULD THE iPHONE 8 BE RELEASED?

Apple will announce the iPhone 8 likely  anytime from September 2017, but that because of the advanced production technology the device will require, it won’t actually hit many stores until a couple of months after that. According to reports, the 3D sensing technology and OLED display are what’s causing Apple to push the release back, as they are adding finishing touches to the brilliant device.

The iPhone 8 is expected to be the most expensive iPhone to date, according to a Fast Company report. The device could come in at above #320,000naira equivalent to $1015.1, but that’s not really too high when you take into consideration the features of this phone.
